Trusted by couples learning the marriage green card process

The answer isn’t a number. It’s 20 items across 6 categories.

Fifty bank statements prove one thing once. What decides a file is coverage, not volume — so this free checklist walks you through all six categories, ordered by which ones carry the most weight, with a column for what you still have to get.

Written by two immigration attorneys who went through this process as a couple themselves.

Five things in it that people get wrong

01

Notarized affidavits have to be originals. Photocopies are fine for almost everything else in your file. For the signed statements from friends and family, they are not.

02

The marriage certificate is not the marriage license. They are different documents and only one of them counts. Order several certified copies from the county while you are at it.

03

Fifty bank statements prove one thing once. Volume inside a single category is the most common way a thick file is still a weak one.

04

Photos work at thirty to forty, spread across your whole timeline, each captioned with the event, the place, and the date. Uncaptioned photos do far less work than people expect.

05

If you keep your life off social media, skip it entirely. It will not raise a red flag, and you never need to manufacture a presence for this.

Why thin evidence is the expensive mistake

Thin evidence is one of the most common reasons a case comes back as a Request for Evidence or a Notice of Intent to Deny. Not because anything was wrong, and not because the marriage was ever in question, but because the file did not answer the officer’s question in enough different ways. That answer costs months you do not get back.

It is a tracker, not a reading list

Every item has Have, Need, and N/A columns. Print it, work it over weeks, and bring the updated version to your interview. Officers are not looking for perfection. They are looking for a consistent, well documented shared life, told across the whole relationship. The reassuring part is that if your marriage is real, you already have most of this.

Six categories, ordered strongest first. Financial and legal. Health, insurance, and benefits. Living together. Social, family, and community. Communication. And what to do if you are long distance or not yet living together.

Who wrote this

We are two immigration attorneys, and we are also a couple who went through this ourselves. One of us was an engineer before law, which is why the Marriage Immigration Method exists as a system rather than a stack of advice. It has since helped hundreds of couples through all three processes, from the green card to removing conditions to citizenship, some doing it alone and some working alongside their own attorney. This checklist covers one part of the first.
